I think everyone agrees that things aren’t the same, and want Fantage to be better than it is. But I haven’t heard any good suggestions of how people want Fantage to change. So I’m pointing out how Fantage, and the community has changed for what I believe to be the worse. Feel free to formulate your own opinions if you disagree with this. Comment below your thoughts.
Fantage’s changes:
Contests Fantage promoted their sense of community by making a big deal about contest winners. Back in the day if you won a contest e.g. Comic, everybody knew who you were, or if your item got made, you were “famous” for something other than your level. The decline of this is partially the growing community having many different winners, but partly because Fantage stopped putting emphasis on it.
The Fantage Blog was a major way that Fantage communicated with their fans and kept them up to date. Now you can’t even access the blog, which is a real shame, especially so you can’t see Fantage’s documented history.
Admin interaction with Fantagians used to be very important. Everybody knew who Himani was, or M was, and it was really exciting to meet them. But now, who are the admins? I don’t know.
Trade’N’Sell Fantage may have already been going downhill before it, but it was a real turning point for the community. The concept and idea was good, however I think the implementation wasn’t perfect, and it created a lot of community problems. Allowing people to move items around created a real elitism, and for many pay to have fun. The items you have and wear is a huge driver for the Fantage community and how it interacts. Before Trade’N’Sell the only way to get old items was to have been there, or bought them fairly at Vintage Classics. This didn’t really create a problem, there was some jealously, or respect towards people with good items, but that was it. You couldn’t change the fact that they had old items. But now, you can pay for, or scam whatever you wanted. This causes a lot of hate in the community, and sets people against each other for scams or “hacking”. Before that you would compete against others for levels, stars or game scores, but that wouldn’t push you apart because it was to do with effort and skill.
Hall of Fame sort of divided the community into us and them (Regulars and “Famous”). With the creation of Hall of Fame, almost the only way to be famous was by having a high level, which was ok to begin with. But people forgot about the people who had their items created, or worked hard on blogs or YouTube. Everything was about level, and often Hall of Fame members would receive a lot of hate, turning them against the average Fantagian, making them hide away, be rude, and ignore people.
Money From what I understand (which may be incorrect), Fantage was actually sold sometime around 2010 or 2011. Somebody who starts a company, because they’re passionate about it, wants to see it succeed and grow positively. When they sell, the person buying it almost always is looking to it so that they can profit. Free items every event for non-members gone, prices go up, more “pay to win” options are introduced, paying is pushed harder. Not paying is made very undesirable. Here’s more information about Fantage as a company.
Pixelling I know designers come and go, and everyone has their own style, but there’s something I just love about the way the old Fantage items were pixeled. They had shading, but they weren’t really complex. They were just looked good. I imagine some people like the newer style of pixelling, but there’s definitely a difference if you compare 2008 clothes to 2016.
This isn’t really major but for some odd reason furniture was redrawn and now looks different to how it used to. Furniture now has a flat sort of look, but before it looked a bit 3D with “shiny bits”.

Community’s Changes:
Internet Community I believe the Internet, as a whole has changed. It used to be very decentralised, there were separate communities around the place, like Fantage. But as Internet use went up, and the whole internet community expanded, communities changed, just look at YouTube for a good example.
Kids and the Internet, back in the day there was no snapchat, or Instagram, and the main way the community connected was through blogs. Kids these days are exposed to “inappropriate” things at a younger age. When they see his, especially through celebrities, some try to emulate it where they can. Sadly Fantage has become an outlet for these things. So we see a lot of “lebz” and “nasty” things happening with people maybe too young to really understand the implications. A 9 year old may have played with Lego or whatever 9 year olds did 8 years ago, but today, a 9 year old is trying to get a “Bae” on Fantage. This is just how things are now, and maybe that’s not a bad thing, but to me it seems a little sad.
Scamming/Hacking/Mistrust Somehow, through the inventions of Trade’N’Sell and MyMall, “Hacking” and scamming has become normalised. Everyday, despite Fantage’s efforts, people are getting hacked and scammed. Yes it’s almost always their own fault, but it shouldn’t be happening. Members of the community doing these things create mistrust, and can ruin the experience for others.
Player Growth As a community grows with more people, people know a smaller percent of the community. For example if there’s 2000 people who play Fantage, and you know 200 who are on your buddy list, you know 10% of Fantage. But if Fantage grows to 20000 and you still only know 200 people, you know 1% of Fantage now. As you can see, Fantage is a victim of it’s own success, with the community becoming less tight knit.
The Current Generation 8 years on, it’s a different generation of Fantage players and Internet users. They don’t know what it was like, what it really could be like. But it’s natural for things to have changed, and maybe some people are just stuck in the past.
Why where we are might be ok:
Change happens, it’s natural not to like it. Change can be exciting, and I’m sure if Fantage stayed the same for 8 years everyone would get bored quickly.
At least we still have it. The changes Fantage have made, especially the money related ones, may be the only reason we still have Fantage. Making a viable business online, especially where you offer it for free to an extent means it’s very hard to make enough money. Staff are expensive, and Fantage would needs to make thousands of dollars a week to pay everyone. Sometimes the changes are necessary.
Things that might rectify the situation:
Removing MyMall and Hall of Fame. I know this’ll be pretty unpopular, but I see this as where the community problems began.
Have different types of contests. For example a blog post award (make them use #fantagecontest so you can check entries easily). YouTube Video award, etc.
Bring back the blog, a relationship with your customers is very important for any organisation. Connecting through the blog to let people know what’s going on, and allows them to contact you without getting spammed through emails.
Put more emphasis on games, not to grind and play as many as possible, but competitions to get the highest score.
People love Fantage, but don’t like feeling forced into paying. Work out a new payment model which makes people want to pay, rather than “needs” them to pay with.

If there’s one thing I disagree about this, it’s called “cracking” not hacking, omfg, I hate it so much when the community refers it as “hacking”, I doubt they’re eVEN KNOW WHAT HACKING IS ACTUALLY LIKE—-
Cracking is when you manage to get a password of someone else’s account and use it, hacking is getting into the system or game and messing it up or adding some shit like textures, see? Two big fucking differences.

I know that’s why I put quote marks around it. If I called it something else the majority of people are going to be like “Wtf are you talking about”.

This is so true.
I can’t help agreeing with the stuff you say.
I never thought about the Hall of Fame and the player growth. Good points you raised there!
Thanks for making this post. ^^

The hall of fame is one of the few reasons I still play. It’s kind of something I wanted to be in when I was newer to Fantage, so now it’s more of a final goal I want to reach. There’s not much else I really do. I just log on to level up and collect stuff I won’t wear.
I do agree with most of this, and nobody knows what hacking is. Telling someone your password and them banning or taking items isn’t hacking. It’s called you trusted someone you shouldn’t have.
Nobody (except that one ddos, and that’s hardly hacking) has actually “hacked” Fantage. A few accounts have been broken into, but hacking is just a serious overstatement. 99% of the time someone was told the password, rather than figured it out.

I know, I used “hacking” in quotes so people knew what I meant. But obviously, as I stated, it’s often their own fault by giving out their password to a “friend”.

I totally agree(lol everyone does XD)
Fantage is getting way to greedy! EVERYTHING is pm and costs tons of GOLD. Its not fair! I mean, there are some good changes, like cool outfits, new houses and just “looking prettier” sorta, but they should rlly bring back the ACTUALLY FUN FOR EVERYONE events, instead of these boring trashy events that are pm and gold expensive. Mymall should DEFINITELY change back into trade n sell, and fantage should get rid of stupid gold. I dont play that often now. And I dont buy their stuff (like with real money, the pm and gold stuff), cuz its my revenge on them forgetting toooooo greedy. Overall, fantage has changes 4/5 for the worse. So sad…………..

Oh yea, and they sell all these crop top outfits (which would be considered inappropriate for fantage) and yet in the chatroom they wont let us say simple nice phrases. I tried saying “trump” to my friend in the chatroom thing and it wouldn’t work. WTF fantage. I’ll bet you ten grand that in a while, fantage is gonna become even shittier and greedy. Thats when I’m done, and imma quit FOREVER. We’ll see how many servers they have left when the time comes. They already lost a WHOLE page from getting rid of trade n sell. Good for them.

I think you missed the point that TRADE & SELL was a HUGE part of the problem. The ability to be able to crack, hack and steal items was because TRADE & SELL. It was so much better when you could just watch a VETERAN walk by with items you wanted but were not here for is much better than stealing from ppl.

ok…..i guess i did hehe. But if fantage were to bring it back, I guess I’d say they should bring it back with a fix to that problem. Idk how to, but somehow fix that hacking/scamming thing. But at least we didnt have to buy everything in gold……? 😉

Only reason I ever really go on Fantage is for the monthly PM gifts. I really like them.
Everyone knows that over time, things change, whether it’s for the better or for the worse. I feel like we all knew that Fantage was just going to be like this. Of course, it used to be a game for all ages, but now it seems that the older ones just sort of, well, took over. Mymall is one place I never go to. It sounds rude, but I don’t really care if people get scammed. It isn’t really our problem, it was theirs. We weren’t involved in any of it, so why does it matter to us? If someone gets scammed, it’s their fault for trusting the person and “trading” with them.
But hey, if there’s one thing you have to love, it’s fantage’s terrible descriptions for items and their also horrible puns. Can’t get enough of those puns.

Honestly i agreed with everything posted here except for removing hall of fame. I don’t understand how that contribute to fantage’s problems? Its been there basically since fantage first started and i think its a way to have people create goals when playing. Just like memepony9 mentioned above, Its always been one of the reasons i still play and when i first joined fantage it was my goal to reach the hall of fame.

I love how this is already so controversial xD but I totally agree.
I joined in 2012 so I don’t have a lot of exposure to “old Fantage” as they say it but I remember that in my early years Fantage was very relaxing and less materialistic. I knew someone who had an account in 2009 and I would watch her play, it seemed a lot of more active and “tightly knit” then we are today. While I did like the addition of Trade N’ Sell (more than MyMall), I think they should’ve allowed for trade between starred and ecoined items (this would prevent spam) and the person accepting the trade would hopefully smart enough to evalutate the worth. Scamming wouldn’t be a problem. As for hacking, it will always exist. The most important thing to do to combat hacking is to change your password regularly (which is what I do as there are videos of what I have on YouTube, establishing my “account worth”) and to never give it out in the first place.
People these days go on Instagram or some other social media platform and complain about what annoys them but this does absolutely nothing. If you want something done, complaining is not the answer. After I write this post, I’ll email Fantage a link to this article because I think it summarizes what is “wrong” with Fantage. As a Youtuber, I don’t need Fantage to recognize my efforts but I think it would be nice to get some recognition from the people “up there” that they have a community and that we work hard to provide additional entertainment to supplement Fantage.

Omg, there is one other reason, that many of the old Fantagians quitted! Because the French, Dutsh and Japan versions were closed! ALL of my friends in the french form (cuz I’m french) stopped to play Fantage because of it closing! I was known there by a lot of people! And also, Trade n Sell was a good place to have stuff for your inventory, even if you were a non member! Also, there is the club at the left of the school.and people was having fun there ( when it was a hit) and post and all that stuff! But now, I don’t see anyone in the clubs! So I can’t meet people that have the same interest or hobby there! 😦 I also miss the events!!! When we had free stuff!

Fantage is okay now, since the pleasures goes to the PMs and the rich. Everyone else doesn’t get much, and MyMall appearing was confusing. Downtown is always crowded on crowded servers, and buildings were changing. Language was reduced to English and Spanish, and there are 12 servers left. The old Fantage was better, and outfits were simple. I could go on, but I need to share this, for it is important for everyone else.
Thanks for posting this!

I agree with this post. As time goes by, trends start to crowd. To a young persons mind, ‘trends’ and ‘popularity’ begins to take over. Fantage was a very simple game for kids, now it seems to be filled with people trying to crawl to the top. I notice that things change, but its not just the buildings, its the whole vibe of Fantage. It seems like Fantage was forgotten. I would LIKE it if they went back to its old self, but the chances of that is very slim.

I think they never should have added gold. For example, I used to always buy the new year’s glasses on Fantage, but ever since they added gold, I couldn’t buy it any more(cause I didn’t have any gold and couldn’t get any).

Also, although I don’t like gold that much, I don’t think Fantage actually became that bad. To me, it just was a fun game.
